The last day in the long life of Sandro Z
Lanaken - Monday 12 September was the last day in the long life of Sandro Z. The well over 31-yr-old great sire had been enjoying his well deserved retirement for several years and blew out his last breath at Zangersheide. Although a lively stallion to the last, his age – and a very high age for a horse at that – began to play up. At his last performance on the Open Day of Studbook Zangersheide this February, the public had treated him to a standing ovation.

Sandro Z, born in 1974 at Claus-Detlef Harbeck, Hövede (Holstein), was a son of the also highly reputable progenitor Sacramento Song xx (by Sicambre xx, dam’s sire Sayajirao xx). Under Franke Sloothaak, Sandro Z performed at Grand Prix level, their relationship producing the considerable sum at the time of a winnings of DM 54,425,-. The Oldenburg jury licensed various sons from his first breeding seasons which proceeded to spread the hereditary qualities of their sire. Below the Celle state stud Sao Paulo, selection champion stallion Sandro Song and the full brothers Silvio I and II. All these stallions are out of daughters of the Gotthard son Gepard.

Soon the versatility of Sandro Z proved his excellence for two totally different disciplines. The oldest branch of the family tree continued to be regular suppliers of showjumping horses, with highlight for the time being Marcus Ehning's international top-class showjumper Sandro Boy (dam’s sire Grannus), who won, for example, the Grand Prix of Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Gera and London. Via Sandro Song (dam’s sire Gepard) a branch split off into the dressage direction and earned repute mainly through Sandro Hit (dam’s sire Ramino). A shared characteristic between the two extremely differing branches is his dark brown colour with few or no white markings. The testator of all this could be admired in the flesh as recently as at the stallion show of the Open Days of Zangersheide last spring. Since Monday last, the old adage also applies to Sandro Z: old soldiers never die, they just fade away.
